Abstract

Geosynthetics are among the most widely used materials in reinforced soil structures, embankments, pavements, and retaining walls. Owing to their polymeric nature, the mechanical behavior of these materials is highly sensitive to temperature variations, as the thermomechanical response of polymer chains directly influences their stiffness, strength, strain at failure, and creep. Although numerous studies have investigated the tensile response of geosynthetics at ambient temperature, only a limited number have addressed their performance at elevated temperatures under confining stress. Conventional testing methods, such as ASTM D6637, are conducted under unconfined laboratory conditions, whereas in the field, geosynthetics are buried within soil and subjected to confinement. Neglecting the realistic soil and geogrid interaction leads to overly conservative predictions and uneconomical designs. Elevated service temperatures significantly reduce the stiffness and ultimate strength of geosynthetics; therefore, investigating the thermomechanical behavior of these materials under conditions more representative of field conditions is essential. The objective of the present study is to design and develop a novel apparatus for evaluating the tensile behavior of geogrids at elevated temperatures, which is a system capable of performing tests under both confined and unconfined conditions with precise control of temperature and confinement. Data obtained from confined tests, which more closely represent field behavior, can be employed in back-analysis procedures and the calibration of predictive models.
